Like James Watson, who recently made racial comments on race and IQ, Charles Davenport of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, made the same mistake in 1929 when he stated that interracial marriage could be dangerous and that only people of Nordic descent had the intelligence to move society forward. But by 1930, Charles Davenport was forced to apologize because there was no scientific basis for his statements. His concern that the inferior Mediterranean and Alpine races will somehow dilute out the intelligence of the Nordics seems ridiculous to most, according to the Newsday News.
Now, like then, the argument for inherited racial differences remains surprisingly resilient. Davenport’s study of racial crossing was funded by a reclusive millionaire by the name of Wickliffe Draper. He funded a group of scientists who have gotten a lot of press for claiming that there is a scientific basis for white supremacy, particularly in the area of intelligence. He have money to the former president of the American Psychological Association who took the stand in the trial that led up to desegregation and stated that segregation was necessary due to different standards of intelligence. In the 1960s, the same group funded a man who suggested that money should be given to any low IQ minority individual who chose to be voluntarily sterilized. The current Pioneer fund director argues that science has proven that evolution has given black people large genitals but small brains.
