With recent news reports regarding the problems with lead based paint on toys, parents are left to pour over the issues regarding lead exposure and its consequences, including low IQ scores on IQ tests, memory problems, inability to concentrate and difficulty with motor skills. Toys produced in China of late have had the potential to expose children to lead and have been recalled, according to Injury Board. Personal injury attorneys have been encouraging parents to learn about how they can keep their children safe from this health hazard.
Parents are encouraged to throw away toys with chipped paint or deteriorating plastic and to check with www.recalls.gov to see if any of the toys they own have been recalled due to tainted paint. Even short term exposure to significant amounts of lead can contribute to low IQ test scores, anemia, memory difficulties, stomach pains and poor motor skills. Other symptoms can include nausea and vomiting, fatigue, headache and higher rates of tooth decay. Experts encourage children to keep toys off the floor in a clean place and to wash the children’s hands frequently. Lead testing is available if parents are concerned that the child has had exposure to lead, either through toys with lead-based paint or to other sources of lead-based paint, such as paint in older homes.
